Albany VA seeing rising need among opioid-addicted vets

ALBANY — David Kuck learned a lot when he finally got help for his addiction to pain pills and heroin.

A native of south Texas who served in the Navy in the 1990s, his worldview had always been fairly simple: You’re either strong in the face of adversity or you’re weak. So when he started chasing his bad feelings away with opiates — first with pills prescribed after a back injury in 2014 and later with heroin — well, he figured that was just him being “chicken s—,” Kuck admitted Wednesday.
