Answer: Opiates commonly are prescribed to treat chronic pain. Unfortunately, for many, this may lead to opiate dependency and addiction.
In the July/August 2018 issue of Family Therapy Magazine, Catharine Devaney McKay and William Northey Jr. wrote an article titled “Opioids and The Family.”
According to their analysis, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called the current opioid epidemic the worst addiction epidemic in U.S. history, with opioid deaths, sales of opioids, admissions to treatment and babies born exposed to opioids all quadrupling between 1999 and 2014.”
